  • Children's Exposure to Cigarette Ads (English only; for Bengali see Tobacco Control Law, The People's Demand)
    Bangladeshi children are more aware of cigarette brand names than of national holidays and of toothpaste. WBB conducted research around Bangladesh to learn the extent to which children are exposed to cigarette advertising, and to see how children's awareness of ads compares to that of other products and events. This paper summarizes the findings of the research. 

  • Tobacco Control Law:  The People's Demand (Bengali only)
    This report contains research in Bangladesh on various aspects of tobacco control law (children's exposure to advertising, and popular demand for strong tobacco control law and for smoke-free transport), on efforts by the tobacco industry to weaken laws in other countries, and recommendations for action in Bangladesh.

  • Tobacco and Poverty:  Observations from India and Bangladesh (English only)
    This report is a compilation of surveys from India and Bangladesh on the situation of tobacco farmers, bidi rollers, tendu leaf pickers (for rolling bidis), and the poorest of the poor who use tobacco. The report challenges the claims of the tobacco industry that tobacco is beneficial to countries' economies and employment. The report was produced by PATH Canada with funding from World Vision Taiwan and Canada, and includes research conducted by WBB.

  • Noise Pollution:  Research and Action (Bengali/English)
    How big of a problem is noise pollution, and how can we act to reduce it?  This report includes results from a survey of 2,500 people in Dhaka, two focus groups, various key informant interviews, and collection of data on noise pollution limits and levels in Dhaka.  The report also includes many practical suggestions for NGO staff, media, and the Government to work to reduce noise pollution and make Dhaka a more healthy and livable city.

    When campaigning for strong tobacco control law, it can be critical to have targeted research illustrating the need for change and the popularity of a law.  This guide offers suggestions on conducting small, low-cost research projects to advance tobacco control law and policy. 

  • Survey Report:  Smokers support tobacco control! (English)
    A report from a survey of 500 people throughout Bangladesh on general knowledge of the problems caused by tobacco, and support for tobacco control measures.  Interestingly, 80% of smokers favored raising tobacco taxes, and over 90% of smokers supported a ban on tobacco advertising and making more places smoke-free.

    Analysis of a survey of nearly 500 shopkeepers and customers, and a focus group, on attitudes towards the government ban on polythene bags.

  • Hungry for Tobacco: An analysis of the economic impact of tobacco on the poor in Bangladesh (Bengali and English)
    A report on how tobacco use worsens poverty and malnutrition, with statistics on tobacco use, poverty, and typical household spending in Bangladesh.  The report shows how tobacco costs the Bangladeshi government millions of dollars a year, and contributes to the malnutrition of 10.5 million Bangladeshi children.  The report is featured in the September 2001 issue of Tobacco Control: http://tc.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/10/3/212

  • BAT's Youth Smoking Prevention Campaign: What are its actual objectives? (Bengali and English)
    An analysis of BAT Bangladesh's youth smoking prevention campaign.  The report includes the results of a focus group discussion and a survey of 300 male youth aged 11-16.  The report discusses youth exposure to BAT cigarette ads, their reactions to BAT's youth prevention messages, and analysis of those messages, as well as an overview of the problem of tobacco company-sponsored youth smoking prevention campaigns in general.  This report was funded by the Government of Canada through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

    This paper gives a summary of the need for tobacco control, an overview of the legal situation regarding tobacco in Bangladesh, information about laws in other countries, and recommendations for strong tobacco control legislation.  The paper is intended to help those seeking legal reform who require advice on areas to include in their laws.
